Are you tired of spending all your free time studying, going online, or playing
video games? If the only muscles (肌肉) you use are for typing on a keyboard or moving
a mouse, then it’s time to visit the Student Recreation Center!
Our Student Sports program runs both competitive leagues (联赛) for serious
players and “just-for-fun” leagues for everybody else in a variety of team and
individual (个人的) sports. In the competitive league, each team will compete three
times per week for a 10-week period. The team with the most victories will win a prize
at the end of the tenth week. In “just-for-fun” leagues, teams play only on weekends,
and there are no prizes given. Both types of leagues offer volleyball, soccer, softball,
tennis, golf, basketball, and more than a dozen other sports. It’s a great chance
to go out with your friends, make new friends, and get some exercise at the same time.
The spring season is coming soon, and it’s easy to get started. Stop by the Student
Sports desk in the Student Recreation Center or go online to
www.studnetrec.OurUniv.edu/studentsports. Whether you come down to visit the center
or register (登记) online, you will have to fill out a simple form. On this form you

middle, or advanced), and the times you are free to play.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was one of the greatest artists of all time. He
was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, Holland. Rembrandt began painting at an early
age. At the age of 15, he traveled to Amsterdam to study art. But he soon returned
home to paint on his own.
Rembrandt’s first paintings were of subjects from history. He used bright colors
and shiny paints. These paintings were popular. Rembrandt became well-known in his
In 1628, Rembrandt began to teach art. He was a respected teacher with many
students. In 1632, Rembrandt again moved to Amsterdam. He began painting portraits
(肖像) of many well-known people in Amsterdam. He soon became famous in Holland for
his beautiful portraits.
In 1634, he married a wealthy and educated girl named Saskia. She served as a
model for many of his paintings. They moved into a large home where Rembrandt hung
many of the paintings that he had collected. He enjoyed buying paintings by other
Rembrandt continued to succeed as an artist. But tragedy (悲剧) began to strike
his family. Three of his four children died at a very early age. His wife, Saskia,
died in 1642.
Rembrandt became very sad. He began to paint with darker colors. But somehow,
his painting grew even more beautiful. He used dark colors around the figures in his
paintings. The figures themselves were painted as if a soft light were shining on
them. One of Rembrandt’s most famous paintings, The Night Watch, is from this period.
Rembrandt began to paint more for himself and less for other people. Although
his work was excellent, he was not able to make enough money to keep his house.
Until he died on October 4, 1669, Rembrandt continued to paint. Rembrandt created
over 600 paintings, 300 etchings (蚀刻画), and 1,400 drawings. Some of his most
fascinating paintings were the portraits that he painted of himself. About 100
self-portraits leave a great record of his lifetime.

I had about 10 minutes to exercise before I had to pick up my two older daughters
from school yesterday. It was a busier day than usual for me with a couple of meetings
besides my regular work.
Years ago, I would have put off my workout and would have left things for the
next day. But since it was a busy day as well, I knew that I may not have all that
much time either. So, I picked up my kettle-bell (哑铃) and went to town for 4 minutes.
See, 4 minutes, if that’s all you’ve got, is enough to give your body a great
fat-burning exercise. How did I get a killer workout in 4 minutes? I used a training
workout discovered 10 years ago by a Japanese Sports Scientist called a TABATA.
It includes 20-second periods of warm-up, followed by 10-second periods of rest
and 4-minute straight exercise. How is a 4-minute exercise able to burn fat? It all
depends on the quality of work you do. Not on the quantity. Here’s how I did it
You should never forget your warm-up. A TABATA workout is 20 seconds of 2-arm
Kettle-bell swings, 10 seconds rest, 20 seconds push-ups, and 10 seconds rest. You
should do those 4 rounds. That’s it. I was done in a total time of 8 minutes by the
time and when I got to school my heart was still pumping pretty hard.
A healthy body is needed for studying and working, and efficiency (效率) is the
key to building a great body in the least amount (数量) of time possible and you can’t
get more efficient than a 4-minute workout.
29. We can learn from the passage that the author ______.
A. is busy with his work
B. has a weak body now
C. has two children in all
D. is a manager in a film
30. The underlined phrase “went to town” in Paragraph 2 means “_______”.
A. put off doing something
B. went to a very small city
C. did something with interest
D. hated to do something
31. What is the most important thing in taking exercise according to the author?
A. The goal.
B. The quality.
C. The quantity.
Healthy, convenient and increasingly popular over the past few years, sushi has
become as common a dish
in the UK as in India or China. It’s a popular lunch-choice for city-workers all
over the country and you’re never far from a restaurant or supermarket selling the
traditional Japanese dish. But it turns out sushi may not be as healthy a choice as
we thought — leading biologists have warned that it is in fact harming both the
environment and our health.
The UK sushi market is worth ?69 million a year, but because we’re eating so
much of it, the tuna (金枪
鱼) population in the oceans is dwindling. According to Professor Daniel Pauly and
Dr Dirk Zeller, the leaders of British Columbia, Bluefin and yellowfin tuna
populations have reached dangerous levels.
Bluefin tuna is often served in high-end, excellent sushi restaurants, while
yellowfin is more common in high-street sushi bars and supermarkets. Increasing global
need means tuna populations are being overfished. Most of the UK’s sushi comes from
the Indian Ocean, but according to Professor Pauly we now only have 2-3 percent of
what we had 200 years ago.
Professor Pauly and Dr Zeller believe it is our love of healthy tuna that’s
causing the problems in our oceans. The fish is popular not just for its taste but
for its health benefits. But while sushi has earned popularity for being low in
calories and high in nutrients (营养物), we may have overestimated (高估) its health
In advance of a lecture at the Zoological Society of London lately, Professor
Pauly said he believes most high-street restaurants serve sushi that contains plastic
microbeads (塑料微珠). “Microbeads are poison pills which take in all the pollutants
and they are eaten by little fish which are then eaten by tuna.”
So what should we eat instead? Dr Zeller and Professor Pauly are asking the public
to step away from sushi and eat more fish like anchovies (凤尾鱼) — less attractive,
but better for your health and the environment.
32. What do we know from Paragraph 1?
A. Sushi is badly affecting us.
B. Restaurants serve special
C. Sushi is still the best lunch-choice.
D. City-workers are beginning
to refuse sushi.
33. Which word can replace the underlined word “dwindling” in Paragraph 2?
B. Frightening. C. Reducing.
34. The correct order of the following should be ______.
① pollutants ② tuna ③ microbeads ④ little fish
A. ④→③→②→① B.③→②→①→④
D. ② →
35. What is suggested by the two experts?
A. Protecting tuna.
B. Eating less sushi. C. Reducing pollution. D.
Raising more anchovies.

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a performer. But when it came time
to go to college and decide what I wanted to be for the rest of my life, I didn’t
want to choose drama as my major. 36 So instead of studying drama, I went to law
school like my two sisters did before me. 37 They worked about 80 hours a week,
but they made good money and could afford expensive cars and apartments in the city.
38 I had great benefits, including four weeks of vacation a year, but I never
got to use any of my vacation time because there was always too much work to do. I
worked from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week, and when I finished, all I could do
was get into my bed until I woke up to do it all over again the next day.
After five years of this lifestyle, I thought I was going to go crazy. I was unhappy
and exhausted, and I never saw my friends and my family. I thought that acting in
a small community play might make me feel better, but rehearsals ( 排 练 ) and
performances all took place during my work hours. 39
I got a small part in a local play, and then a bigger part, and then a lead role.
Now I make my living from acting, and every now and then, I do some legal consulting
(咨询) for a little extra money. 40 I had to give up my big apartment and expensive
car, but I’m so much happier now.
A. They aren’t good examples to me.
B. They seemed happy enough, I thought.
C. I don’t get paid a lot for my acting jobs.
D. So I made a serious decision and quit my job.
E. I am certainly a better performer than lawyer. F. Making a living as a performer seemed impractical to me. G. After law school, I got a good job and worked as a lawyer for a big company. 第三部分 英语知识运用（共三节，满分 55 分） 第一节 完形填空（共 20 小题；每小题 1.5 分，满分 30 分）

Student volunteers brought books to children
On Children’s Day, a group of student volunteers from our school delivered boxes
of books to children staying at Sunshine Welfare House.
Upon their arrival, the students were cheerfully greeted by the staff and kids
there. The moment the kids saw the books, their eyes began to shine with excitement
and they couldn’t wait to read them. The volunteers helped the kids choose their
favorite books and read with them together. By the time they had to say goodbye, both
the students and the kids at the welfare house were unwilling to part from each other.
The volunteers’ effort were worthwhile. What they did made a difference, not
only to the little kids, but to themselves.
